<B>______________________________________________________________________</B></div> <div> <B>The Grand Design - Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow</B></div> <bR> <div> In December 2011, I ordered 'The Grand Design' by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow, along with 'Feynman's Rainbow' by Leonard Mlodinow, and 'War of the Worldviews - Science vs. Spirituality' by Deepak Chopra and Leonard Mlodinow.  Over the years, I had read most of Stephen Hawking's previous books, so I was familiar with his style of writing, but had not read anything from Leonard Mlodinow.  It was clear however, after reading all three books by the end  of December, that I could identify the patterns of his writing style, along with the stories he repeated between all three of these books.  The book that really got my attention enough to write this review was 'The Grand Design', that he had been listed as a co-author.  I had been reading it while visiting one of my grand daughters, Julia, age 9, over the holidays.  She became fascinated with the graphics in the book and I spent a couple of hours explaining some of the concepts and reading passages to her.  The main puzzle that we both tried to solve, was the fact that a full page graphic in color of a form of the Fibonacci Spiral, was placed prominently before each chapter.  Since the name of the book was 'The Grand Design', we explored every chapter, along with the Index, for some mention, and/or explanation that I could offer to Julia.  </div> <bR> <div> Sad to say, we could not find any mention of these graphics that were so prominant throughout the book, so I decided to write to the Press Secretary for Stephan Hawking when I returned home, to ask about this dichotomy, along with the fact, that none of the material in the book was developed by Stephan Hawking.  Disappointingly, he never responded to my inquiry.  </div> <bR> <div> However, it was very clear that --  the patterns of writing and the presentation of material --  were all pointing to Leonard Mlodinow.   He even told a story in The 'War of Worldviews' about his 9 year-old daughter, and how he tried to explain the contents of 'The Grand Design', while they were waiting for breakfast one day in an IHOP.  He claimed she did not understand any of it and was not interested.  After my experience with Julia, I was astounded that a man of his intelligence did not sit down with his daughter and go through the book with her, to explain the concepts, rather than attempting to just explain it to her in a restaurant.</div> <bR> <div> In fact, when Julia and I were finished I asked her to write down what impressed her the most from our two hours of exploration and what she would tell her teachers about the book.  Since she plays volleyball, she was especially interested in 'Chapter 4: Alternatives Histories', that began with a photo of 'buckyballs' explaining that a team of physicists in Austria fired a series of soccer-ball-shaped molecules toward a barrier and they were made of sixty carbon atoms, called 'buckyballs'.  It showed the experiment with the two slits in a wall and the two different patterns on the other side.  When the real soccer balls were kicked through the slits  they formed two groups, and when the buckyballs were shot through the slits, a resulting pattern reflected quantum rules and formed 5 groups on the other side.  I could then explain the nanosize of the 'buckyballs' to her as only being visible under very powerful microscopes.  She was fascinated and wanted to learn more.  I was able to explain that quantum physics recognizes that to make an observation in science, you must interact with the object you are observing.  Much like shining a light on a ball in the dark; at the quantum level, shining even a dim light on a tiny quantum particle -- by shooting photons at it -- has an appreciable effect, and experiments show that it changes the results of an experiement.  The book had wonderful photographs showing much of Feynman's theory of quantum mechanics in color showing the different paths of particles and waves, including coherence between the points.  Julia was only in 3rd grade at the time of this visit, and has proved my theory that if you make science exciting with many visual elements, a child will stay interested for two hours or more.  </div> <bR> <div> So due to all these experiences, even though I did not get an answer from Stephen Hawkings press secretary, it is my suspicion that in the future, the Fibonacci Spiral will be declared as the 'Grand Design' of the movement of energy to become matter in our limited dense 3-D reality.    I hope you enjoy exploring new ideas and sharing them with others.  Since 95% or more of our Universe is 'unseen dark matter, dark energy and anti-matter', we only see the electric part of the dynamic fields of energy in space that has light, so we surely do have a lot to learn.  Studying the patterns and relationships of these dynamic fields and the spiraling fractals in the fibonacci spiral motion, that becomes the double torus has been a fascinating journey of exploration.  It brings the 'awesome wonder' of creative design and movement into matter, that we then inhabit in our physicality.  How could you not be interested in expanding your knowledge base to inlcude the 'unseen 95%' of reality?
